An Exciting Hobby!
Does the beauty and allure of crystals captivate you? These mesmerizing stones hold a special place in many hearts, offering a connection to the natural world and a hint of something more—a potential for focus, well-being, and a deeper sense of self. Whether you’re drawn to their metaphysical properties or appreciate their unique geological wonders; caring for your crystals is essential. This guide will equip you with the knowledge to keep your crystals happy and sparkling, ensuring they continue to radiate their magic for years.
Always handle your crystals with clean hands, and understand which gems in your collection are toxic. Some common toxic minerals include galena, stibnite, and malachite (in its raw form). Use gloves if necessary and when uncertain; washing your hands after handling your crystals is also good practice!
Understanding the Mohs Hardness Scale
The Mohs Hardness Scale is a great reference point when thinking about how to care for your collection. It’s a system that tells us what can scratch your crystals.

- Gypsum and calcite can be scratched with your fingernail.
- Flourite can be scratched with a penny.
- Apatite and orthoclase can be scratched with a knife.
- Quartz and topaz can be scratched with a steel nail.
- Diamonds are the only mineral that can’t be scratched. (Unless you scratch it with another diamond.)
Finding the Perfect Home for Your Crystals

You can safely store most crystals using felt pouches. This keeps them protected from dust, debris, and harsh sunlight. When carrying crystals, be mindful of their hardness. You may not want to carry quartz and selenite in the same pouch since quartz will damage the selenite.
I keep delicate pieces, such as raw malachite, in a pouch far away from the rest. I keep toxic varieties in separate black felt pouches. Having toxic specimens out isn’t advised, especially when children or pets are nearby.
Note: Some will dull in sunlight! Amethyst is one purple beauty that will become sun-bleached over time.
Cleansing your Crystals
Cleansing your crystals is an important part of their care, helping them maintain their energy and vibrancy. While there are many methods to choose from, it’s important to consider the unique properties of each crystal.
• Avoid water for softer crystals. Crystals with a Mohs hardness of 5 or below (such as selenite or opal) should not be submerged, as water can damage them.
• Try smoke-cleansing. Use incense, sage, or palo santo to energetically cleanse your crystals without physical contact.
• Harness sunlight or moonlight. A few hours in the light of the sun or a full moon can recharge your crystals’ energy. Be cautious with sunlight, as some crystals (like amethyst) may fade with prolonged exposure.
• Use selenite. This versatile crystal is popular for clearing the energy of other minerals. Simply place your crystals near or on a selenite plate or wand.
Each crystal is unique, so be sure to research the best cleansing methods for your specific collection.
