What is a Blue Moon?

Growing up, when I heard the phrase “once in a blue moon,” I always interpreted it as meaning “once in a lifetime.” But as it turns out, they aren’t nearly that rare! A more accurate statement might be “28 times in a lifetime.” So, what exactly is happening?
A blue moon can refer to one of two things: a seasonal blue moon, which happens when there are four full moons in a single season, with the third being labeled as the blue moon; or a monthly blue moon, which occurs when two full moons appear within the same month.
Though the term may evoke an image of a moon with a bluish hue, this is rarely the case. However, the moon can take on a bluish tint under specific atmospheric conditions, like when ash or smoke particles are present in the sky. You could also create the illusion of a blue hue with camera filters.
Interestingly, the blue moon we’re experiencing right now is seasonal—and it’s happening in the middle of a retrograde, too!
Why Is It Significant?
The August 2024 moon falls under the zodiac sign Aquarius, making it the only full moon in Aquarius this year. Aquarius, the water-bearer, is paradoxically ruled by the element of air, embodying logic and scientific thought rather than intuition. It’s also governed by Uranus, the planet of freedom, innovation, and revolution.
The moon amplifies the energies present at this time, offering us a second chance to connect with the transformative energy of the full moon. With Aquarius ruling all things technology, this moon might inspire breakthroughs in how we interact with the digital world or encourage us to embrace innovative solutions to old problems.

Spiritual and Magical Energies

This moon is more than just a rare occurrence; it’s also a powerful time for spiritual and magical work. The lunar cycle is slightly shorter during a blue moon, which can act as an accelerator for any manifestations or rituals. This means that any intentions you set or spells you cast with the aim of peaking at the full moon will manifest more quickly.
To make the most of this energy, consider engaging in full moon activities like creating full (blue!) moon water, charging your crystals, or journaling under the moonlight. Whatever your practice looks like, embrace the unique energy of the moon to amplify your spiritual work.
Mythology and Folklore
Despite its mystical name, the blue moon is a relatively modern concept with minimal historical or mythological associations. Unlike the more widely recognized phases and cycles of the moon, the blue moon doesn’t hold a special place in the folklore of ancient cultures. Today, its significance is more pronounced in astrology and modern spiritual practices than in traditional myth.
Personal Reflection and Journaling Prompts
The full moon is often a time of introspection and heightened emotions. Use the introspective energy of this moon to dive deeper into your thoughts and feelings. Here are some journaling prompts to guide your reflection:
- What do I feel differently about during this moon cycle?
- What rare or specific goals do I have for this next lunar cycle?
Historical and Astronomical Context
While the idea of the blue moon is largely a modern interpretation, it’s still fascinating from an astronomical perspective. The next blue moon will occur in May 2027. But right now, we’re experiencing something even more special: this month’s moon is not just blue; it’s also a supermoon.

A supermoon occurs when the full moon coincides with the time when the Earth’s proximity to the moon is closest. This results in the moon appearing larger and brighter in the sky—a fitting companion to the rare blue moon.
